Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Lenten Season!
But what is Lent?
Lent is that forty-day period in which we anticipate the Glorious Light of the Risen Lord at Easter as well as reflecting on our own baptism into the Risen Lord Jesus.
We anticipate by taking away things like flowers, bells, holy water before Holy Week and covering statues and removing icons! Church law forbids baptisms and weddings at this time except in case of emergency. Neither are we allowed to sing the Gloria or the Alleluia at Mass. Because purple is the color of Lent, we are asked to reflect a penitential mood. We ask you to read the following Lenten Advisory:
Lenten Advisory
The Lenten Season is traditionally a time of preparation and sacrifice. We prepare by a sacrificial spirit of prayer, fasting and charity (almsgiving). We also prepare by reflecting simpler worship and a barren church environment. Fr. Michaels and the Liturgy Committee based on the church’s liturgical teaching continue to adopt the following guidelines for the Lenten Season:
1. There can be no baptisms or weddings except in an emergency.
2. Flowers are not permitted in the Church.
3. Holy water will be removed at the Church exits before the beginning of Holy Week.
4. All icons will be removed and all statues will be covered at the beginning of Lent.
5. The Sanctuary will be simple in its decoration employing the colors of purple and gray.
6. All church bells will remain silent until the Easter Season.
7. Silence and/or quiet instrumental music will replace the usual Communion Meditation.
8. Simpler music with greater use of silence including the recessional will be practiced.
9. The liturgical law of the Church prohibits the singing of the Gloria and the Alleluia.

Mini Day of Reflection: Lord, Open My Eyes
The power of God to remove our Blindness
Presented by Fr. Dana Michaels, Gretchen Bailey and Madelen Lontiong
Saturday, March 25, 2017 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Followed by lunch at 12:15 p.m.
Join us as we quietly reflect on the story of the man born blind in John’s Gospel (9: 1-41). We will take an in depth look at this story while applying the concept of blindness and restored sight to many aspects of our world and our daily lives.
As we will be serving lunch, we need to know how many people are coming. You may sign up on the weekends of March 4/5, March 11/12, and March 18/19. You may also sign up by calling Madelen Lontiong at 482-1286.
